ON THE STRUCTURE OF A CAST NITROGEN-CONTAINING NIOBIUMSILICON ALLOY OBTAINED BY SELF-PROPAGATING HIGHTEMPERATURE SYNTHESIS |

In the present work, the structure of an alloy based on the Nb-Si system, obtained using the SHS technology in a nitrogen atmosphere is investigated. High temperature synthesis process in this case occurs due to the chemical energy of exothermic oxidation-reduction reaction. The melt was saturated with nitrogen from the gas phase. The study was carried out by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive analysis. It was found that the largest part of nitrogen in the obtained alloy was concentrated in niobium nitrides Nb2N, the niobium-based solid solution (Nbss) and silicide α-Nb5Si3 contain about 0.5 – 0.7 wt % nitrogen. The Nbss lattice parameter (a = 0.3331 nm) is greater than the one of pure niobium (a = 0.3301 nm) due to the formation of a supersaturated solid solution of silicon and nitrogen in niobium.
