CHITIN AND CHITOSANBASED MATERIALS FROM DIFFERENT SOURCES FOR RADIONUCLIDES ADSORPTION
A.N. VELESHKO I.E. VELESHKO E.V. RUMYANTSEVA

Novel chitin- and chitosan-based materials (CChM) were
fabricated from diff erent objects like perishing bees and
higher basidiomycetes. Obtained materials have been
tested in adsorption experiments with uranium and
strontium. Comparative analysis showed correlation between
radionuclides adsorption effi ciency and composition of
CChM. Melanin containing CChM proved to be more eff ective
in uranium and strontium adsorption processes. All of
investigated CChM had high adsorption properties in uranium
adsorption processes. For chitin made from perishing bees
distribution coeffi cients (Kd) of UO2
2+reached 8,1·103 ml/g. For
others CChM they had 2·103 ml/g value. It has been noticed that
chitin containing materials were more eff ective than chitosan
containing. For UO2
2+ distribution coeffi cients in processes
of adsorption on chitosan made from perishing bees were
lower and reached only 1,15·103 ml/g. Maximum of strontium
Kd reached in interaction with chitin-melanin glucan complex
Mycoton (Кd =1,2·103 ml/g). Presence of melanin depended
on adsorption and precipitation of radionuclides in solutions.
Melanin water solution (0,1 %) can hold uranium (100 mg/l) in
pH range 1…9,5. Degradation of chitin-melanin complex made
from perishing bees in manufacturing process under oxidizing
conditions (Н2О2 or Н2О2+HCl) may explain the reducing of its
adsorption effi ciency.
