ROMANOV The detailed overview of over than a centenary history of studying surface electromagnetic waves, the development of viewpoints, as well as the history of experimental researches, is given in the article. The reasons for the diffi culties of SEW detection are analyzed. The article also presents the research results of Russian scientists, which succeed to prove experimentally the existence of SEW at optical and THz range.
