D.I. MENDELEEV AND THE MODERN THEORY OF SILICATES |

The crystalline state of silicates, which together with silica constitute 90% of the lithosphere, determines the effectiveness of their crystal-chemical research. Before creating the method of X-ray structural analysis, D.I. Mendeleev and V.I. Vernadsky were central to their study. Crystal chemistry of silicates is the result of the work of two teams led by the Nobel Prize in Physics (1915) U.L. Bragg (Physical Laboratory of the University of Manchester) and Academician N.V. Belov (Laboratory of the Institute of Crystallography RAS). The current stage of the study of silicates is the «electronic crystal chemistry», which studies the distribution of electron density in crystals.
